WORKS to install traffic calming and road safety improvements have begun at a busy junction in a Limerick village.

Nelson’s Cross is a known danger hotspot in Castleconnell and the new safety roadworks began last week.

The installation of a new surface and tabletop ramp is designed to slow down approaching traffic on the R525, follows an initiative by local residents who gathered hundreds of signatures in support of the safety measure.

The roadworks got underway last week and have been welcomed by members of the community and local representatives.

Limerick city and Fine Gael TD Kieran O’Donnell and Castleconnell-based Fine Gael councillor, Michael Murphy welcomed the news.

“We wish to commend Limerick City and County Council for progressing these measures particularly as the Junction at Nelson’s Cross has been a constant cause of serious safety concerns and this new table-top ramp should assist in improving safety for road users here,” Deputy O’Donnell said.

“It is important that all local feedback on the new measures are taken into consideration over the coming days and weeks. We must ensure that any remaining safety concerns are addressed here and will be following up with Limerick City and County Council in that regard,” Deputy O’Donnell added.

Limerick Sinn Féin senator Paul Gavan also welcomed the news: “Local residents living close to the cross led the petition and deserve all of the credit for persuading the council to get this work done.

“I was honoured to present that petition to both Limerick County Council and The National Transport Authority, prior to the decision of the council to secure funding for this work.

“The crossroads has been a site of a number of accidents in recent years and has been a cause of major concern to many. As I live just 200 meters from the junction I am only too well aware of a number of near misses in recent years. This installation will certainly slow traffic down and represents real progress,” Senator Gavan said.
