Scrambler bikes raise the ire of Limerick residents

CALLS have been made for a greater garda response to the misuse of scrambler bikes in Limerick which is leaving “many people frightened”.

Scrambler bikes are motorised vehicles that are becoming more and more popular, and concerns have been raised over the anti-social behaviour associated with the bikes including reckless driving.

Sinn Féin TD for Limerick City Maurice Quinlivan described the dangerous use of scramblers as a year-round challenge for communities and the gardai.

“The long nights of the summer months tend to see an increase in the use of these vehicles in public spaces. The situation has worsened over the years. Many of us will have seen dangerous driving across Limerick including in the core city centre.

“Some of these drivers wear balaclavas, drive deliberately recklessly and are very intimidating, many people are frightened.”

The Sinn Féin TD said a much stronger response from gardai is needed.

“I raised these concerns at the most recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee on June 2 as I have done repeatedly over the years and whilst I welcome the garda response, clearly more needs to be done as the situation has worsened,” he said.

A dedicated operation has been running from March with high-profile patrols occurring in Moyross, Kileely, Thomondgate, St Mary’s Park, Canal Bank, Lock Quay, Shannon Fields and the River Shannon Walkways.
