'Snippets from Life' is a book which celebrates a long life well lived

A LOCAL author is holding a reading from the second edition of her book which celebrates a long life well lived.

Vera Shaw will play host to the event marking the second publication of 'Snippets from Life', in the Dooradoyle Library from 2pm on Saturday next, May 9.

The book is a series of short stories, with the first third focused on social history.

It details life in the 1950’s before electrification had reached all parts of the country.

It follows Vera's more recent life, beyond the Covid-19 pandemic, the bereavement at the loss of husband Alan in 2021, and healthy senior living.

Vera was one of 10 children, and moved to Limerick in 1972.

Vera’s husband Alan worked as a hydrometric engineer with the ESB at Ardnacrusha Power Station.

Their three children, Niamh, Eoin and Daire were all brought up in Limerick and educated in Crescent College Comprehensive.

While living and rearing a family in Limerick they all immersed themselves in the life of the community.

They joined the Limerick Lawn Tennis club and played tennis and squash there for a number of years.

In addition, Vera was a past president of the club, with both serving on the committee.

Alan also set up Thomond Orienteers and for a number of years organised various events.

He also made the maps on which the events were run at places like Cratloe Wood and across Munster.

When Alan retired he took up his second career as priest in charge of Kenmare and Dromod parish in Kerry and retired for the second time in 2009.

All are welcome at the book reading.
