TENANTS' support charity Threshold is to open an office in Limerick city centre.

Council planners have afforded permission for the group to transform the former Steamboat Records unit at Steamboat Quay.

Four new jobs will be created with Threshold's chief operating officer Cormac Lally hoping it will be open by the end of the year.

The office will provide in-person appointments and support to renters who are facing difficulties.

It will also be used as a base for the charity to provide outreach services to the remainder of the region.

Mr Lally said: “This project began in 2019 where we had identified that we want to raise some money to expand our footprint.

The number one area we identified was Limerick. It is the fourth largest city and we haven't a presence in it.”

It's all being made possible thanks to funding from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund and the Community Foundation of Ireland.

“During Covid-19, we adapted our services. We brought in web chat and video consultations. People had a lot more avenues available. However, the reality is there are still a substantial number of people in many places who are digitally disadvantaged, or perhaps they don't have the confidence or language skills. So face-to-face and in-person is where we can make the most difference,” said Mr Lally.

On average, Threshold works with 22,000 people annually.
