A UKRAINIAN man has died following a "tragic accident" in the old convent in Bruff where he resided with over 100 fellow refugees from the war-torn country.

It is understood the male, aged in his 30s, suffered a fall down a staircase on Christmas Eve. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance but died on St Stephen's Day from the injuries sustained.

It is understood local gardai are treating it as a tragic accident. A post mortem is expected to take place in the coming days and a file will be prepared for the local coroner.

Fr Noel Kirwan, parish priest of Bruff and Dromin-Athlacca, expressed his condolences on behalf of the local community.

"It’s tragic - to come here to escape from what they are enduring and to have an accident like that and your life to go from you... It must be terrible for the community living together," said Fr Kirwan.

Despite being new to the parish the priest has seen first-hand how the Ukrainians have been warmly welcomed.

"There is a lot of involvement around the community with them - there is a very good relationship. Even with my own moving to Bruff, some of the Ukrainians came out with the sacristan and helped me move my stuff.

"I have no doubt locals will do their utmost at this sad time for the Ukrainian community - that is the nature of the people in Bruff," said Fr Kirwan, who will say prayers for the deceased at future Masses.

Local councillor, PJ Carey from Kilmallock said it was "terrible news".

"I would know a few of them from going to the gym with them. It must be very hard for all the Ukrainians living in the old convent. I know the people of Bruff will rally around and do whatever they can at this very sad time," said Cllr Carey.
