Update on 26-bed ward for University Hospital Limerick

Retention permission sought for structure built during Covid-19
UNIVERSITY Hospital Limerick (UHL) is seeking to retain permission for a 24 single bedroom ward it built during Covid-19.
Hospital bosses had the facility built under emergency measures during the pandemic when there was a need for immediate extra beds to respond to a spiralling number of cases of the disease.
Four years on, an application is set to be made to retain the ward.
This is located on the ground floor of an existing building at the Dooradoyle campus.
On top of this, there is a plant room at the first floor, and a new link corridor is planned to connect this extension to the existing hospital.
External site lighting is planned, while there will also be an upgrade of landscaped areas alongside all associated site services.
The HSE lodged the application with Limerick City and County Council’s planning department last week.
However, it was deemed to be invalid, which means a fresh application will need to be made to the planning authority.
At that time, a decision date will be set by planners.
