UPDATE: Source of 'harmless smell' in Limerick revealed

THE SOURCE of the unpleasant smell across Limerick this Friday has been revealed.
Following enquiries from Limerick Live to various bodies, the Shannon Foynes Port Company has confirmed that the odour emanated from the docklands area of the city.
In a statement, the company said the smell was caused by an "interaction" between atmospheric conditions on Thursday night and Friday morning and an "organic inert material" which is cargo and due to be transported from the area next week.
The customer responsible for the cargo has made contact with Limerick Port and expects the odour to reduce over the weekend.
"It is also exploring measures to prevent a recurrence," the Port Company added.
Staff from Limerick City and County Council's environment and climate action department were on site at Dock Road and O'Curry Street in the city centre this Friday.
They have also met with the fire and rescue service, Shannon Foynes Port Company and Gas Networks Ireland.
"A prevalent strong smell has been attributed to material being transported in the area and the council has no evidence to suggest that there is any associated hazard," a spokesperson for the local authority added.
Earlier, Gas Networks Ireland confirmed no gas leak was detected.
However, the council and Gas Networks Ireland would like to remind the public that if you smell gas at home or on the street, please call 1800-205050 immediately.
