WATCH: Hero hurlers named Limerick Persons of the Month
THE LIMERICK senior hurling team that brought home the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the fourth year in-a-row have been named the Limerick Persons of the Month.
Team captain Declan Hannon was on hand to receive the award at a special presentation at the Clayton Hotel.
Due to injury, the Adare man did not play in the final in Croke Park but he said he was accepting the award on behalf of his teammates.
“The boys did fantastically well. They are a credit to their county so it is great to accept this on their behalf,” smiled Declan at the presentation .
The All Star hurler said it did feel “different” to be watching the game from the sidelines as opposed to being in the thick of the action on the pitch but “as long as Limerick won, happy days!”.
On July 23 last, Limerick were crowned All-Ireland champions for the fifth time since 2018 after beating Kilkenny on a scoreline of 0-30 to 2-15 in Croke Park.
The men in green were down at half-time but made a thrilling comeback.
Their powerful display in the second half meant they went on to win the match and the senior hurling championship.
That night they returned to Limerick by train and celebrated their win at a private function at the Woodlands House Hotel in Adare where fans congregated to cheer and wave them off the team bus.
The next day, the players and the backroom team made their way to Limerick city for a rousing homecoming that saw thousands of people take to the streets to welcome home their heroes.
Joined by their leader John Kiely onstage at Pery Square, the boys sang their self-appointed theme song, What Do You Want to Know? on stage alongside the track's singer Michael Maloney.
It was a jubilant return to the Treaty County that perfectly encapsulated how much the win meant to the players, as well as their loyal supporters.
Despite this victory being their fifth since 2018, the team show no signs of slowing down and neither do their fans who continue to make the journey to stadiums throughout the country, including Croke Park, to cheer on their heroes.
The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
