Gardaí managed to catch the intruder

GARDAÍ have warned homeowners after a criminal broke into a house without damaging any windows or doors.

On Sunday, March 3 at 4:50pm a woman in her 50s returned to her home in Thomondgate. She was in her kitchen when she heard somebody upstairs.

She was frightened and ran to a neighbour’s house. The neighbour entered her house and discovered a male in a bedroom upstairs who then fled immediately.

The man was able to enter the house after he shouldered the front door, the lock was weak and gave in so easily that there was no damage done to the door.

When gardaí arrived at the house, the woman told them that her son’s Revolut card was missing. She could also tell gardaí that it had been used in a nearby shop.

Gardaí immediately went to look at the shops’ CCTV, they got a clear description of a suspect and began a patrol of the area.

A short time later, the suspect was spotted by gardaí, arrested, brought to Henry Street garda station and he is currently before the courts.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, crime prevention officer at Henry Street gara station said: "The most basic principal of security is to control access, this means that your home or any premises must have good quality windows and doors.

"If they do not lock securely, you either repair them, replace them or add another layer of security to them like extra locks and bolts."
