The issues animal shelters now face with more abandoned dogs thanks to the XL Bully ban were brought up while candidate Mattie McGrath was canvassing Dundrum

The XL Bully ban came up as an shelters are facing while Mattie McGrath was canvassing the town of Dundrum in Tipperary.

Sandra Connors, a local living in Dundrum, said she wanted something to be done about the aftermath of this year's XL Bully ban.

She warned that dogs were being dumped in shelters due to the ban as owners hadn’t signed up in time to register their pets.

She said this new law was brought in hastily and criticised Heather Humphry’s decision to bring in the law so quickly without any forethought about the aftermath and the unnecessary suffering of many dogs now dumped in shelters to be killed.

She said that instead of a blanket ban the breed should have been muzzled and microchipped, not abandoned. Mattie agreed, calling it a “knee jerk reaction” that the government made.
