Call for roundabout at 'very dangerous junction' on busy road in Tipperary

Something is needed to slow traffic, says Mayor
The preferred solution for the Heywood Road junction on the Frank Drohan inner relief road in Clonmel, between the Cahir Road and Cashel Road roundabouts, will be established during the development of the N24 Waterford to Cahir project.
This was stated in a report by District Engineer Gillian Flynn to a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
Her report stated that the most recent safety intervention at this junction was implemented during the Clonmel Inner Relief Road Pavement Scheme, which was completed in 2020.
The council had requested collision data from TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) to establish if the additional bollards installed during that scheme had resulted in improved safety, based on collision data since 2020.
“The Heywood Road Junction forms part of the N24 Waterford to Cahir project. The intervention for this section of the N24 is an existing N24 corridor improvement of upgrade.
"Therefore, any further interventions at this junction are unlikely," Miss Flynn’s report added.
District Mayor Pat English had requested that a roundabout would be provided at this junction, as he said that the existing junction is very dangerous for all road users.
Something was needed to slow the volume of traffic, he added.
He said that a number of the bollards on the N24, at the junction of the road leading to the rugby club, had been removed and that area was unsafe again.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that the late council engineer, Peter Britton, had stated some years ago that it would cost €1 million to instal a roundabout at the Heywood Road junction.
It would probably cost €2 million or €3 million now, but it would make a big difference to motorists and residents of the area.
