Cllr Liam Browne made the suggestion at this week's monthly meeting for the Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District.

A Cashel-based councillor has called on more to be done to combat speeding in villages around Tipperary.

Independent councillor Liam Browne told Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel's Municipal District meeting on Monday that he felt speed ramps were not a good enough solution to deter people from speeding.

“They’re only a way towards a solution,” explained the councillor. “We have got to find some way of having mobile cameras that can be moved around from village to village and collect speed fines, to put people off speeding out of villages,” said Cllr Browne.

“If you go across Europe and across America, they have found solutions to these problems. In housing associations in America, sometimes they have their own speed cameras and they’re able to hand out fines. Maybe we can look at doing that,” said Cllr Browne.

The councillor then asked if the local authority could somehow carry out an information campaign, run by Tipperary County Council in conjunction with the RSA, to please ask people to stop speeding in our villages. That’s what kills people, speed. Simple as that,” concluded Cllr Browne.

This year a new default speed limit came in which saw many rural roads limits lowered to 60km per hour or to 80 km per hour.

However, despite the reductions in speed limits across the country, more needs to be done to deter the public from the danger of speeding in towns and villages.
