Store expected to shut its doors towards the end of May or early June

The end of an era in the business life of Clonmel will arrive when Clinton’s closes in the coming months after 109 years of successful trading.

A closing down sale at the clothes store began this week, with the store expected to finally shut its doors towards the end of May or early June.

Owner Mary Clinton operates the store with her husband Denis Costelloe and the couple are retiring.

“We’re fortunate in that we’re closing on our own terms and aren’t being forced out of business,” she says.

The shop was established by Mary’s grandfather James Clinton at 40 Parnell Street (now the site of Mack Cleaners) in 1915, before relocating to its current home at 25/27 Parnell Street in 1927.

“We’ve had the most wonderful staff and also very loyal customers from Clonmel and Tipperary and over a wide area including Kilkenny, Waterford and Cork,” says Mary.
