This Tipperary councillor thinks it might

Tipperary councillor Siobhan Ambrose has suggested information could be included with dog licences to encourage more people to adopt.

During a discussion of the environment sections report at last month’s sitting of Tipperary County Council, Cllr Ambrose complimented the work of the service in re-homing animals.

However she said it might be helpful to target people who already have dogs.

She said some people renewing their licence may be in position to foster or adopt a second dog. If they are, they should contact Tipperary County Council.

Director of Services for the Environment and Climate Action Section, Eamon Lonergan, said that dog licences are the responsibility of An Post, but he will raise the suggestion.

He also agreed it was great to get so many dogs re-homed.

According to last month’s council management report, 203 dogs were surrendered or seized by dog wardens up to October 2023.

Of those, 18 dogs were re-homed, 138 were sent to rescues, 16 were reclaimed and 33 were put down.

The report also says that 5,426 dog licences were purchased.

Twenty-seven horse queries were reported to the council’s environment section so far in 2023.

This resulted in 33 pickups to date.
