The public have been asked to contact the Gardaí if they have safety concerns regarding roads, the council have said.

The council have issued advice to the public about who to speak to if they have a safety concern regarding roads in Tipperary.

At the recent annual meeting held in June for the Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District, a query was raised by Sinn Fein Cllr Anne Marie Ryan, regarding a recent leak in Tipperary Town.

“We had a major issue at the weekend, on Davis street in relation to a water leak. It was actually causing the road to sink somewhat.

"We spoke to Irish Water who eventually came out on Saturday but I’m unsure if it’s water services or emergency road services who should deal with that?

"When a leak impacts the road like it did on Saturday, where does the responsibility lie?" asked Cllr Ryan.

A senior engineer from the council responded that it was Uisce Eireann's responsibility to fix the leak.

Cllr Ryan told the meeting that the leak has deteriorated the road greatly since it began, on Wednesday evening.

She told the council that the road was sinking and wondered if it was not the responsibility of the emergency services in the roads department to deal with the safety of roads in these instances.

James Murray, Senior Engineer at Tipperary County Council, replied stating that if there’s an emergency situation, the guards are the first to respond.

"We will support them if they request our assistance," he concluded.
