Tipperary Council says the local authority received two expressions of interest from developers with approved planning to build housing in Clonmel in response to a call out it issued.

Tipperary County Council has received two “expressions of interest” for the development of two affordable housing schemes of about 10 homes each in Clonmel.

Two property developers with sites and planning approval for housing in Clonmel Borough District, submitted expressions of interest in developing affordable housing estates in to Tipperary County Council in response to its call out.

The deadline date for submitting expressions to the Council of interest was Friday, November 8.

When built, the two housing schemes will be for so-called “squeezed middle” income people who earn too much to qualify for social housing but not enough to buy a home in the private housing market.

The response the Council received to its call-out for expressions of interest for developing affordable housing schemes in Clonmel was revealed by Senior Housing Officer Shane O’Dwyer at Tipperary County Council's Special Housing meeting in Clonmel last week.

He was responding to Clonmel Fianna Fáil Cllr Siobhán Ambrose who welcomed the Council’s plan to roll-out affordable housing schemes in Clonmel.

“Affordable housing is one avenue that enables people to get on the housing ladder because of the fact there is input from the Council,” she said.

After the meeting, Council CEO Sinead Carr said once agreement is reached between the Council and developers who submitted the expressions of interest, the Council will apply to the Department of Housing for approval for the project.

She confirmed the two housing schemes will comprise about 10 houses each.
