Cllr Michael 'Chicken' Brennan complained about the condition of Bailey Street in Killenaule and the R689 in the Killenaule area at a meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District councillors

A councillor has appealed for a street in Killenaule to be resurfaced as he fears it's a road safety hazard.

Cllr Michael 'Chicken' Brennan issued the call for the resurfacing of the town's Bailey Street at the April meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District's councillors where he informed council management that a car overturned on the street on the day of the meeting.

The Labour councillor said there was an ongoing issue with the surface of this street and he had called several times for it to be upgraded since he was elected as a councillor in 2024.

He wondered was the road surface a factor in this accident and pointed out that he had to have his two hands on the steering wheel while driving on this street due to the ''pulling and dragging” he felt on the vehicle.

Bailey Street wasn't the only road surface Cllr Brennan voiced frustration over. He repeated his criticisms of the condition of the R689 road in the Killenaule area where an Uisce Éireann water mains laying project is taking place.

Cllr Brennan said the road's condition is still “unbelieveable” and “horrendous” and he warned again of his fear of a road accident fatality occurring on the road if its condition isn’t improved.

He travelled regularly on the road and believes it's condition was a factor in the tyres of his jeep having to be replaced after less than 4,000 miles of road use.

Kieran Malone of Tipperary County Council's Roads Section, said he couldn’t comment on the condition of Bailey Street or the accident without knowing more specific information. He appreciated the condition of the R689 had come up at previous meetings. He said the Council was consulting with Uisce Éireann and the contractor on this project but explained the local authority has to wait until the water mains project contractor's work is finished before reinstating the road.

Mr Malone pointed out that with such projects “you have to break eggs in order to make an omelette”.
