Crossing will slow 'phenomenal' speed of traffic in this area of Tipperary

Old Bridge in Clonmel is being used as 'relief road'
Measures will be implemented to reduce the speed of traffic passing through the Old Bridge area of Clonmel.
A raised pedestrian crossing located east of William O’Brien Street forms part of the Old Bridge to Suir Blueway Active Travel project, members of Clonmel Borough District were told at a recent meeting.
In a report to the meeting, District Engineer Gillian Flynn stated that this project will go through the Part 8 (planning permission) process, where the local community will have an opportunity to review the plans and submit representations for additional traffic calming if considered necessary.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose had requested that consideration would be given for the provision of traffic calming measures at the Old Bridge, between Cascade Park and the Centra Shop. She described the speed of the traffic in the area as “phenomenal”.
It was especially difficult for motorists trying to reverse from the front of their homes.
Cllr Ambrose was pleased that plans were in motion for a raised pedestrian crossing.
District Mayor Pat English said that local residents were very upset about the speed of traffic and even the amount of traffic in the Old Bridge area. It was being used as a relief road.
However, he was concerned that the District Engineer’s proposal for a raised pedestrian crossing could be a few years down the line, because it was tied into a walkway to be provided in the area.
