A Garda roads policing operation over the May Bank Holiday recorded two fatalities on Irish roads in the first four days of enforcement.

This brought the total number of road deaths in 2026 to 57.

The operation ran from 7am on Thursday April 30 to 7am on Tuesday May 5. During the first four days, up to 7am on Monday May 4, Gardaí arrested 123 people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More than 2,400 speeding offences were also detected across the country.

Among the higher speeds recorded on Sunday May 3, Gardaí detected 96 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Rathmines Road Lower in Dublin 6; 112 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the Navan Road in Dublin 15; 158 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R498 at Inch near Borrisoleigh in County Tipperary; and 141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the R446 at Faheeran in County Offaly.

More than 240 drivers were also detected for offences involving the use of mobile phones while driving or for not wearing a seatbelt.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority called on all road users to take extra care over the holiday period. Gardaí said all available officers were engaged in road policing, with a strong focus on detecting drink and drug driving offences.

Motorists were reminded to obey speed limits, wear seatbelts, and avoid using mobile phones while driving. They also warned of the risks faced by pedestrians and cyclists, who were described as vulnerable road users.

Cyclists and pedestrians were advised not to walk or cycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to remain visible and alert at all times.

The operation formed part of ongoing national efforts to reduce road deaths and serious injuries during high risk holiday periods. Gardaí said enforcement activity continued throughout the weekend period.
