From this week's Tipperary Star

One of the best local good news stories of the year came to us this week.

That is of course, the Tidy Towns results and north Tipperary did not disappoint.

Six groups this side of the Premier County took home awards, while many others increased their points and displayed their fabulous projects.

There is no group in Tipperary who shouldn’t be proud of their terrific work throughout the year. And we look forward to seeing what they do next.

Their work is vital for the maintenance of our towns, villages and communities.

Every month councillors raise issues around litter, biodiversity and local amenities at council and district meetings.

In a world where environmental anxiety, loneliness and social isolation are becoming increasing issues, Tidy Towns groups give people the opportunity to take action and get involved.

While there are enough people who think it perfectly appropriate to throw rubbish in hedges and litter from cars, there are perhaps many more willing to take steps to ensure that isn’t the norm.

In their report, the adjudicator who visited Terryglass complimented the 30 volunteers committed to making their area shine.

In a number of other reports, the years of commitment communities make to Tidy Towns is praised. And new groups like Endeavour Award winning Moyglass are welcomed.

Volunteerism improves mental health and fosters a sense of belonging. While Government support is so important, community participation is more so.

For some people, like children, teens and asylum seekers, Tidy Towns might be the first time they have volunteered.

Tidy Towns are an important part of an area’s ecosystem.

They support positive environmental action, belonging and the enhancement of communities.

If you find yourself in a position to support your local group, do.

They are one of the reasons you live in such a lovely place.
