Carrick-on-Suir

Another successful night of reminiscing, organised by the South Kilkenny Historical Society, was held recently at the Rhu Glenn Hotel, Slieverue.

This year’s guest speaker was Seamus McGrath from Carrick-on-Suir.

Despite weather alerts the event went ahead as planned with the attendance enjoying a lovely meal and were treated to an excellent night of reminiscing by the Tipperary man.

Once he began speaking, the attendance forgot about the inclement weather and had a very enjoyable night.

Seamus gave an account of the history of Carrick-on-Suir, and went on to talk about his family and his own life. During his talk Seamus gave a very detailed, and entertaining, account of his family, education life, sporting activities, song writing and entertaining.

The final society event of 2024 – Lá an Dreoilín – takes place on St. Stephen's Day, December 26th, starting at 11am in Mullinavat Parish Hall.

TRADITION

Lá an Dreoilín, in Ireland, centres around the tradition of capturing a wren, which is said to bring luck.

People march dressed in garbs made of straw, including headwear that is woven into a bell shape, playing drums and traditional music, and singing.

The society organised this event, for the first time, last year and it proved to be an outstanding success.

Following on last year's very successful event, the format will be similar this year, and participants are asked to make costumes, with a prize for the best costume.

People of all ages are asked to participate in the event and participants are not restricted to 'boys' - for this event the term 'boys' means any gender and any age!

Participation is not restricted to those who have costumes and/or can sing or play a musical instrument - people are asked to participate in whatever way they can, or are comfortable doing and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun.
