Investment for Clonmel Link Road project has been described as ‘transformative’

A €20 million investment is set to unlock land for up to 1,200 homes to be built in Clonmel and improve traffic flow in the town.

The announcement was made on Monday evening by the Government and has been described as ‘transformative’ for Clonmel by Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy.

The inclusion of the Clonmel Link Road project in the first round of the Government’s new Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF) is an important infrastructure development for Clonmel.

Under the first call of the fund, Clonmel will benefit from investment in Link Road Phase 1 and Phase 2, connecting Longfield Road to Fethard Road and extending from the L689 Fethard Road to the L3623 Carrigeen Business Park.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Murphy said, “This is a hugely significant investment for Clonmel and one that will deliver lasting benefits for local families, commuters and businesses. The project will unlock land for up to 1200 homes while at the same time improving connectivity and helping to reduce congestion on our existing road network.”

“We know there is strong demand for housing across Clonmel and South Tipperary, but housing cannot be delivered at the scale required without the supporting infrastructure. This investment will help remove those barriers and ensure that housing growth can take place in a planned and sustainable manner.”

Deputy Murphy said the new link roads will also play an important role in improving traffic movement throughout the town.

“Anyone who regularly travels through Clonmel knows the pressure that exists on parts of the road network, particularly during busy periods. These new link roads will provide additional connectivity, improve access to key development lands, and help reduce traffic pressures on existing routes, including the bypass.”

“This is a smart infrastructure investment. It supports housing delivery, improves transport connectivity and strengthens Clonmel’s capacity to grow and attract further investment in the years ahead.

“The announcement is a major vote of confidence in Clonmel’s future. By investing in the infrastructure needed to support housing and economic growth, the Government is ensuring that towns like Clonmel can continue to develop and prosper. I will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure this important project progresses as quickly as possible,” concluded Deputy Murphy.

Welcoming the funding Senator Garret Ahearn said it was an important development for the future growth of the town.

“This is a hugely important investment for Clonmel and for the future growth of the town. One of the biggest barriers to housing delivery has been the lack of enabling infrastructure. This project tackles that challenge head-on and will help unlock the land needed to deliver thousands of homes.”

“Housing cannot be built at the scale we need unless the supporting infrastructure is in place. By investing in roads and other key infrastructure now, we are creating the conditions needed for significant housing delivery over the coming years,” he said.

Nationally, 82 projects are being approved under the first call of the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund, representing approximately €862 million in investment and with the potential to unlock up to 200,000 homes across the country.
