Clonmel High School’s First Year footballers participated in a Munster ten-a-side football blitz in the TUS Campus in Moylish, Limerick, organised by the university.

It proved to be a very successful day for the Clonmel school, as they emerged victorious in the shield competition.

The High School took on St Joseph’s, Spanish Point in their opening match and they met the challenge with energy and enthusiasm and, combined with some great team play, the High School secured a first round win on a scoreline of 5-3 to 1-0.

It was a quick turnaround for round 2 where The Abbey CBS, Tipperary Town awaited.

Another Trojan effort from the Clonmel school concluded in a 4-5 to 1-0 victory over their local rivals.

In their third match, Salesian College, Pallaskenry proved a much stiffer challenge.

Both teams battled it out, and it was a nip and tuck affair throughout, but it was the Limerick school who edged the tie by a goal, 3-2 to 2-2.

In the concluding match of the group, the High School faced Kerry opposition for the first time in Castleisland Community College. The Kerry school were a step ahead throughout the match and proved much too strong as they ran out comfortable winners by 6-3 to 1-2.

The High School’s efforts were not in vain, however, as a third place finish in the group ensured they advanced to the shield final, where they would face off against John the Baptist Community School of Hospital.

A much improved display from Clonmel saw them put some great passages of play together in the first half. But at half-time, it was John the Baptist that held the slimmest of leads.

The second half saw the High School produce their best half of the competition and they ultimately emerged comfortable winners on a 7-4 to 2-3 scoreline with captain, David Lyons of Grangemockler, accepting the shield on behalf of the panel.

This was a great day’s football for the First Year group and they now look forward to the Under 14 county championship in May, and competing in Munster at under 15 level next year.
