Highly skilled care team in Tipperary secondary school has a crucial role to play

Tipperary Museum of Hidden History - CBS High School Clonmel exhibition
An exhibition charting the story of the CBS High School Clonmel is currently running at the Tipperary Museum of Hidden History in Clonmel.
This year the High School is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the school.
The exhibition will remain open until June 7.
Music therapy and its introduction this academic year to the High School is an example of just how broad the parameters are for the pastoral care of students.
Former High School student, Joe Roche, a professional singer and music therapist, is now part of the highly skilled High School care team working six hours a week with first year and TY students.
“I think the High School is unique in terms of the comprehensive care team now in place.I don’t think there is a secondary school in the country that has such a care team and we are only scratching the surface in terms of the needs of the student,” he said.
His specialty, music therapy, is now part of the setup up and Joe has introduced drumming as a way of exploring different approaches to collaboration, teamwork, and how to make the best use of resources.
The programme allows students to learn how to communicate with one another, gives them an awareness of group dynamics, and gives them an opportunity to have more autonomy in how they work.
