Councillors attack Government on student fees hike

Sinn Fein Tipperary members , councillors David Dunne and Annemarie Ryan have described the Government decision to hike student fees by €1,000  per year as 'disgraceful' during a nationwide affordability crisis.

Cllr Dunne stated "the cost-of-living crisis is impacting households across Tipperary. The price of groceries, electricity, car insurance and fuel prices all impact students and their families who support them in their education. Now the government is demanding an extra 1000 euro in fees from these hard-pressed households."

Cllr Anne Marie Ryan highlighted 'this hike in student fees comes as we see so many young people feel as though they are being priced out of a third level education through spiralling rents. We hear Government speak about how they understand pressures on our young people, but their actions are pushing students to the brink.

Cllr David Dunne added "this is a government choice, they are choosing to increase these fees. The reality is that choices this Government are making are pushing young people onto the next plane out of here to Australia or Canada."

Cllr Annemarie Ryan concluded "We are demanding a cost-of-living package and as part of that, we will be proposing that student fees are reduced by €1500 in September as a first step to ending student fees."
