St Ailbe's beat Glenstal Abbey in dramatic encounter in Nenagh

Nenagh Lawn Tennis Club played host to a pulsating Boys Under 19 Munster Schools Shield Final, as St Ailbe’s from Tipperary Town edged past Glenstal Abbey in a dramatic and history-making encounter.

The atmosphere was electric, the temperature hovered at a testing 23 degrees, and both schools left everything on the court in the pursuit of glory.

From the outset the competition was fierce, with two matches unfolding side by side. Jack Halligan and Evan Ryan found themselves up against formidable opposition, with Glenstal dictating the early play. Although the Ailbe’s duo showed flashes of brilliance with some well-executed rallies and clean winners, the critical points consistently swung Glenstal’s way.

Meanwhile, Darragh Healy and Jack Aherne McInerney engaged in a tight battle in the opening set of their match. Their narrow first-set win proved pivotal, boosting their confidence as they comfortably closed out the second set to level the overall match score at 1-1.

Halligan and Ryan returned for their second match with intent, taking the opening game. However, Glenstal swiftly turned the tide and claimed the match to take a 2-1 lead.

All eyes turned once more to Healy and Aherne McInerney, who had to win to keep St Ailbe’s hopes alive. Rising to the occasion, the pair delivered a commanding performance, levelling the match at 2-2 and forcing a deciding super set.

With players taking a well-earned rest from the heat, tension built ahead of the final showdown. St Ailbe’s shuffled their pack, pairing Jack Halligan and Darragh Healy for the decisive set.

Glenstal raced into a 3-0 lead, catching Ailbe’s cold. But the Tipperary side dug deep, breaking back in a closely-fought fourth game to get on the board.

Healy then held his nerve in a marathon fifth game under immense pressure, levelling the set at 3-2.

The next two games were shared, making it 4-3 to Glenstal. But Halligan and Healy produced a stunning break to tie the game at 4-4 before Healy confidently held serve to push Ailbe’s ahead for the first time, 5-4.

With Glenstal reeling, Ailbe’s pressed home the advantage. A final break of serve sealed a breathtaking 6-4 victory in the super set and delivered St Ailbe’s’ first-ever Munster tennis title.

Supporters and family members erupted in celebration as history was made. The grit, determination and skill displayed by the St Ailbe’s team will live long in the memory. This team’s triumph marks the beginning of a new chapter in the school’s sporting legacy.

Thanks are extended to Nenagh Lawn Tennis Club for hosting this event and to Maggie and all in Munster Tennis for making this event happen.

This victory was all the sweeter, given the journey these boys have taken together. For the past three years they have soldiered side by side, enduring the heartbreak of losing out in super sets in previous years.

Each setback only strengthened their resolve, and the experience gained proved invaluable as they faced down the pressure this time around.

Now, in their Leaving Certificate year, they have finally fulfilled their potential and etched their names into the history books of St Ailbe’s.
