Ten years ago, on May 22 2025, Ireland made history by being the first state to legalise same-sex marriage through a referendum.

Tipperary Live speaks to Cllr Declan Burgess, who campaigned for a yes vote ten years ago while he was Young Fine Gael's Munster Regional Organiser.

Cllr Burgess reflected on the historic moment in Ireland's history.

"As we mark ten years since the historic 'Yes' vote for marriage equality, I am filled with immense pride and reflection.

"That moment in 2015 was more than just a victory at the ballot box — it was a victory for love, dignity, and the right to live and love openly in our own country.

"I was honoured to be involved in the yes campaign.

"It remains one of the most positive and unifying movements I’ve ever been part of.

"The energy, hope, and compassion that powered that campaign showed Ireland at its very best — a nation ready to move forward, to listen, and to stand up for equality.

"This anniversary is not just a time to look back, but also a moment to recommit ourselves, to the values that drove that campaign — inclusion, respect, and fairness for all."
