It was quite the celebration at the Irish Wheelchair Association Tipp Town centre on Wednesday, March 29 for the presentation of certificates in Primary Food Safety.

The course was provided by Tipperary ETB.

The Objective of the Primary Course in Food Safety is to create an awareness and knowledge in food workers of the reasons for the importance of good food safety practices.

With the emergence of new food safety legislation the need for formal training/education of food workers in good hygiene practices has been encapsulated in law.

The course covers a broad range of subjects, including an overview of basic microbiology, food contamination, food safety law, personal hygiene, cleaning procedures and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points.

There were 5 participants on the course; Eleanor Fennelly, Mark O'Neill, Audrey Tynan, Kevin Woods and Kevin Campion.

The course consisted of 8 sessions and on completion of the course, the participants had to undertake a written/oral exam.

It is great to report that the 5 participants were successful in the exam and were therefore awarded a Certificate in the Primary Course in Food Safety from the EHOA.

It was very appropriate then that Eleanor, Mark, Audrey, Kevin W and Kevin C, should be honoured for their achievement and Josephine Carroll, Service Co-ordinator at IWA Tipperary South, was on hand to present them with their certificates. Josephine thanked Tipperary ETB for providing the course and congratulated the participants on their achievement.

"The subjects in the course were geared towards enabling you to see and understand where problems could arise in the preparation, handling, storage or service of food and I am delighted that you have all achieved primary certification in food safety with distinction" said Josephine.

She went on to welcome back Tom Lennon, who had been absent from the service for 18 months, and she thanked Dee Morrissey, who provided such wonderful entertainment for the celebration.

On behalf of the wider community we offer our congratulations to the 5 participants and wish them continued success in their future endeavours.
