The Village Market is on Saturday from 12pm to 3pm

Apprentice weaver Lauren Randler will be giving a demonstration in willow basket making at this week's Village Market in Holycross.

The market is this Saturday from 12pm to 3pm and the public is invited to come along.

Ms Randler with Hanna Van Aelst came to Ireland from the US a year ago to learn more about the craft

"Since being here I have fallen I love with Ireland and Ireland's deep tradition of basket-weaving.

"To me weaving with willow offers us a way to connect to our heritage and into the natural rhythms of the world.placeholder image
"To me weaving with willow offers us a way to connect to our heritage and into the natural rhythms of the world.

"Creating a basket starts way before the weaving process. Willow has a rhythm of her own.  Willow is harvested in the winter when the leaves fall off and before the sap rises in early spring. Then it’s meticulously sorted, spends months drying and only then is ready to be re-soaked and weave.

"Weaving baskets as a craft offers us a way forward from plastics and into a practical useful craft that will last generations without harming the earth.

"Weaving with willow really is medicine for this time we are all in and I look forward to sharing a bit with you all this weekend at The Village Market, Holycross," said Ms Randler.
