GIY’s LEAF Programme Returns for a Second Year, Encouraging Communities to Take Climate Action Through Food Growing.

The Literacy & Food Education (LEAF) programme is back for a second year, bringing 9,000 free seed packs to 25 public libraries across the Southeast, including libraries in Tipperary.

Developed by social enterprise GIY and funded by Pobal as part of the Community Climate Action Programme, LEAF empowers individuals and community groups in Tipperary to grow their own food—using libraries as hubs for learning, sharing, and sustainability.

LEAF week will begin on March 24th, where free seed packs will be available at Cashel Library, Clonmel Library, Thurles Library, Tipperary Town Library and Carrick on Suir Library.

Whether you’re an experienced grower or just starting out, LEAF provides everything you need to begin growing at home or in a community setting.

The programme also encourages community groups to use their local library as a hub for meetings, knowledge-sharing, and access to expert-led food-growing resources.

“This campaign is about more than just growing food—it’s about growing connections,” said Jen Langan, GIY Engagement and Marketing Director. “Libraries are the perfect space to bring people together, share skills, and build a sustainable future.”

GIY understands the importance of libraries as a space to connect and grow ideas all too well. "At GIY, we planted the seeds of change as a humble library group, but we've since cultivated a thriving movement, empowering people to grow their own food for a healthier, more sustainable future.

This demonstrates that when communities take meaningful action, they can create real and lasting change."

How to Get Involved:

Visit your local library during LEAF Week (March 24, 2025) to collect a free seed pack and access food-growing guides, workshops, and expert support. Grow at home or join a community group to make an impact together.
