The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) allows local councils to improve private and less-used roads, helping deliver the Government’s Our Rural Future Rural Development Policy 2021-2025.

Roads are considered eligible if they provide access to any of the following categories:

  • Parcels of land owned or used by at least two individuals, with at least one parcel used for agriculture, or
  • Land used for harvesting activities, such as turf or seaweed, by at least two individuals, or
  • At least one parcel used for farming by one person, and separate access for harvesting, such as turf or seaweed, by another person, or
  •  Amenities, including lakes, rivers, or beaches.

If your private road needs work, contact your local council to find out if LIS funding can help fix it.

Funded by the Local Democracy Scheme
