Munster Fleadh off to great start in Thurles with events on all week long

It all kicked off on Sunday, July 14, and will run up until Saturday, July 20.
The 2024 Munster Fleadh Cheoil is in full swing this week in Thurles as people flock to the town for the week-long music event.
It all kicked off on Sunday, July 14, and will run up until Saturday, July 20, with a jam-packed schedule of events planned throughout the week to ensure visitors from Tipperary, and across the country, are well entertained.
Hosted by the Tipperary County Board CCÉ, this is the third time Thurles is playing host to the Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan, after the 1968 and 1979 editions were held in the town.
The week got underway with a free event on Sunday night. “Tradult,” took place at 4pm in The County Bar, followed by a concert in The Monks Bar at 7pm.
There was a Ukrainian musical exhibition on Monday, among other events, in the Source Arts Centre, followed by a singing session led by Tadhg Maher in The Monks Bar.
Although events have been going on since Sunday, Tuesday saw the official launch of the Fleadh as well as “Bru Ború Summer Show,” which took place in The Source Arts Centre.
On Wednesday, “Sean Nós Dance Workshop with Ranóg Townsend” will take place from 8:30pm in the Source, at a cost of €15 per ticket.
The Ursuline campus will host events on the Thursday. The “Slide and Polka Workshops,” will cost €15 to attend, and will run from 11am to 4pm, while a “Best of Tipp” scone making competition will take place from 2pm to 4pm in the County Bar, before a history of Tipperary music in The Monks Bar at 8pm.
A concert with Garadice will take place from 7:30pm in The Source Arts Centre on the Friday, with a youth trad disco running in Hayes’ Hotel from 7pm to 11pm, both costing €20.
Finally, to close out the festivities, “Céili with Rise the Dust,” will take over the Premier Hall on Saturday, costing €12 for a ticket.
More information on all the events taking place throughout the week can be found on the Munster Fleadh website, www.munsterfleadh.ie.
With plenty of events being hosted, and plenty of variety between the different acts, there will be enough at the Fleadh Ceoil na Mumhan to keep everybody entertained, as the organisers look forward to welcoming their guests.
The core items of the fleadh competitions are taking place during the week with dancing taking place on Wednesday and Thursday and the remaining music, singing, comhrá and storytelling competitions taking place on Friday and Saturday.
Street sessions
Weather permitting, the organisers hope that visitors will feel free to play music in street sessions in keeping with fleadh traditions of old.
Over the last few weeks, several music sessions have been held, thereby generating the fleadh atmosphere that we all look forward to.
All will finish in plenty of time for staunch GAA supporters heading to Croke Park on Sunday 21 July for the All Ireland Hurling Final between 2 Munster rivals Cork and Clare.
