A heartfelt ceremony took place recently in Gaelscoil Chluain Meala to honour the late Seán Ó Ciardha, the school’s Chairperson, who held the role since the school’s establishment in 1994.

Seán, from Wheatfields, Clonmel and Nenagh, passed away on April 29.

Seán’s wife Teresa, his extended family and local dignitaries including the Mayor Pat English, Ros Stafford, Brendan Ferris, members of the board of management, Múinteoir Síle and Múinteoir Máire from the Gaelcholáiste, all gathered to pay tribute to a man described by school principal Karen Mhic Gearailt as generous, visionary and deeply committed to the school community since its foundation.

Seán was known for his love of the Irish language, music, sport and education.

One of his proudest achievements came in 2022 with the official opening of the school’s new campus.

In recognition of his decades of selfless service, the Board of Management has named the school hall in his honour.

A beautifully-designed plaque, created by Gaelcholáiste staff members James Casey and Colm Ó Conghaola, was unveiled during the event by Seán’s brother Éamonn. Among the speakers were representatives from across the school and community.

Múinteoir Síle from the Gaelcholáiste paid tribute to Seán’s unwavering commitment to education, while Board of Management representative Brendan Ferris spoke on behalf of the board, expressing deep gratitude for Seán’s wisdom, work and three decades of dedicated service.

The Mayor of Clonmel, Pat English, highlighted Seán’s tireless work since 1994 to ensure the school’s success.

“Seán was instrumental in shaping this school from the ground up,” the Mayor said.

“His vision, passion for Irish culture, and ability to lead quietly but effectively have left a permanent mark on Clonmel’s educational landscape”.

A particularly heartfelt moment came when Seán’s brother, Éamonn Ó Ciardha, spoke on behalf of the family. He expressed deep gratitude for the honour bestowed on Seán and warmly thanked all those involved in organising the tribute — especially the pupils — for their meaningful commemoration of Seán’s contribution to the school.

“It means so much to us to see his legacy recognised in this way,” he said.

Traditional music and dance performances by students opened the event, reflecting Seán’s deep love of Irish culture.

Later, pupils from Rang 6 presented the Ó Ciardha family with a commemorative name plate and a photo book chronicling Seán’s work and achievements — a keepsake to be shared with his children and grandchildren.

As the community gathered in the hall now bearing his name, those present reflected on a fitting proverb from Conamara: “An rud a dhéantar i ngan fhios don domhan is fearr é” — “That which is done quietly, without recognition, is often the most noble of all”.

Seán Ó Ciardha embodied that principle, and his legacy will live on in the heart of the school for generations to come.
