The new community nursing unit at Western Road, Clonmel, is expected to be handed over to the HSE in the first quarter of 2026, whereby a process of registration will be undertaken with the regulator HIQA.

This was stated by Geraldine Sutton, Head of Service at the HSE’s Older Persons Services in Carlow/Kilkenny and south Tipperary, in response to requests for informatiom on the new unit made by Deputy Michael Murphy.

She also stated,"Once registration is achieved, then the current residents who reside in St Anthony’s Unit, Clonmel, will begin transferring into the new community nursing unit on a phased basis, so as to make the transition from their current  surroundings into the new unit as comfortable as possible.

“The unit will continue to accept new referrals based on demand and suitability until the unit is at full operational capacity in 2026.

“A programme of recruitment has commenced, with some posts accepted and commenced and others due to commence in the service in early 2026.

“The new community nursing unit will provide for five short-stay beds, of which three will be used for palliative care,” Ms Sutton told Deputy Murphy.
