Development welcomed by Cllr Siobhán Ambrose

The start of construction work on a new corridor at Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel has been welcomed.

Clonmel Councillor Siobhán Ambrose has stated, “this is the new corridor that will link the redeveloped 33-bed step down Slievenamon Unit to the main hospital”.

“These 33 step down beds are badly needed and we look forward to the opening of these beds and the new link corridor by the end of the year.

“I am also glad that local contractor Mulcahy Construction were successful in this tender and are carrying out these building works”.

Cllr Ambrose says that the rollout of this €7 million project followed a visit in 2021 at her request by the then Taoiseach Micheál Martin to visit the hospital and open the new 40-bed unit.

“On the day Deputy Micheál Martin had a meeting with the hospital’s General Manager Maria Barry, other hospital personnel and HSE officials regarding this project, and the need to upgrade the hospital following its recent elevation at the time to university status.

“In addition to sanctioning this €7 million funding, Fianna Fáil Health Minister Stephen Donnelly also sanctioned €75 million last May to the hospital for the upgrading of the Medical, Paediatric and Maternity Units.

“This €75 million, in addition to the current €7 million project for the redeveloped 33-bed step down Slievenamon Unit and the new link corridor is again reinforcing the fact that Fianna Fáil are committed to supporting and strengthening the continued development of Tipperary University Hospital here in Clonmel,” says Cllr Ambrose.
