New recreational space planned for Roscrea town

The space will include a skate park, wildflower garden and chill out zone
Councillors in the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District have formally approved the Chief Executive’s report on a proposed development of a recreational area in Roscrea town.
The recreational area will include a skate park, Multi-Use Game Area (MUGA) and wildflower garden.
The development will also provide for a “teenagers zone” with group socialising seating, a swing set, exercise bars and a general “chill out zone.”
Councillor Shane Lee proposed the report saying, the facility is important to create spaces for children who do not play sports.
He also said that based on the success of these recreational areas in other places, he believes this one will be well used.
“It is an amenity that will be very much welcomed in the town of Roscrea.
“I very much support it, and hopefully the funding will not be far behind,” Cllr Lee.
The report was seconded by Cllr William Kennedy, who said it will be a great service in the area.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Smith also welcomed the report and development, calling it “fantastic.”
Cllr Smith said this was something in the works for some time, but the location had been a “stumbling block.”
He congratulated everyone who worked on overcoming the location issues.
“It will be a beautiful amenity as you go into the town,” said Cllr Smith.
The proposed recreational area will be located off the N65 adjacent to the Roscrea Leisure Centre and Roscrea Recycling Centre.
Access will be provided by the entrance to the leisure centre, and the development provides for footpath, lighting and landscaping.
The plans went on display for public consultation from April 1, 2024, until May 17, 2024, and submissions were accepted until May 31, 2024.
According to the report, no third-party submissions were received.
