His appointment was welcomed at last week’s sitting of Nenagh District Court

Nenagh solicitor David Peters has been named as the new State solicitor for north Tipperary.

His appointment was welcomed at last week’s sitting of Nenagh District Court.

Mr Peters replaces Michelle O’Connell who stepped down in June.

Solicitor Elizabeth McKeever led the congratulations, describing her colleague as “a familiar face, articulate and never afraid to ask the difficult questions.”

She said the “comradery” between all of the professions in the court was “unique” and it was great to have the state solicitor position back in Nenagh. But, she quipped, his appointment was a “move to the dark side.”

Sergeant Regina McCarthy extended her heartfelt congratulations to Mr Peters on his appointment and to Ms McKeever, she responded goodnaturedly:

“It is not the dark side, it is actually very bright, Ms McKeever.”

Court registrar Eithne Canning, Judge Fiona Brennan and the representative of the probation service also extended their congratulations to Mr Peters.

Ms Canning said:

“You are always a pleasure to deal with and a gentleman.”

Mr Peters thanked everyone for their “kind words” and said he was “somewhat daunted and excited” for his new role.

Mr Peters described the district court as the “beating heart of the community” and paid tribute to the late Judge Elizabeth MacGrath.

He said that it was on the day he heard of her passing that he got the news of his appointment.

Mr Peters also thanked his family for the support they have shown him as he begins the next chapter of his career.
