New Tipperary councillor looks forward to working for the betterment of 'great town'

Fine Gael's Tom Acheson replaces Deputy Michael Murphy
Tom Acheson said that he would be “floating out” of the meeting at the Town Hall instead of walking out, following his co-option to fill the vacant seat on Clonmel Borough District.
He replaces his Fine Gael colleague Deputy Michael Murphy, following his election to Dáil Éireann in November.
District Mayor Pat English welcomed Cllr Acheson to the Borough District’s monthly meeting. He had previously served as a councillor between 2009 and 2014.
His work in the community was second to none, and Cllr English had no doubt that he would serve the people of the district with great distinction.
Cllr Niall Dennehy said that the last time that he and Cllr Acheson were together in the historic chamber was 13 years ago, when Cllr Acheson’s daughter Laura had married Cllr Dennehy’s son Niall.
“This Clonmel Borough District is not a council. We have no powers and no money,” said Cllr Dennehy.
Despite that, he supported Cllr Acheson, and Cllr English as the new cathaoirleach.
Cllr John FitzGerald said it gave him great pleasure to welcome his Fine Gael colleague Tom Acheson, who he said was a real Clonmel man, a great Moyle Rovers man and a great Clonmel Show man.
He was delighted that Cllr Acheson had decided to come back into politics and Clonmel would be the richer for his return.
He wished Cllr Acheson, his wife Eileen and family all the best.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that, having served with Cllr Acheson in the past, she knew he was a very good councillor.
She said he would be equally as good this time around, and would be more than competent and capable of making the hard decisions.
Cllr Richie Molloy said he was delighted to welcome Cllr Acheson back into local politics. He had a huge history with Clonmel Show and Moyle Rovers and his family had a long association with the town. It was great that someone was willing to put his name forward to serve the people.
District Manager Jonathan Cooney also welcomed Cllr Acheson and said he looked forward to working with him for the next five years.
Cllr Acheson said he was delighted to have the opportunity to join the council and work for the betterment of what was a fantastic town.
“This is a great town and together we can move it forward,” he said.
