'Not a single fistful of grit,' Tipperary people furious over condition of footpaths

A Letter to the Editor
A Letter to the Editor has highlighted how furious people are over the council's response to the cold snap that hit the Premier County hard this week.
It reads: "I'd like to draw your attention to the condition of the footpaths in Clonmel recently. I work for Boston Scientific and commute everyday from and to Carrick-on-Suir. I'm not motorised, so I use public transport.
"And in most cases walk from the train station, along the N24, and up the hill via Cashel Road.
"All the footpaths have been covered with ice since the heavy snowfall. There is not a single fistful of grit there.
"Today, when the temperature is just above zero, the footpaths resemble a skating arena. I saw people walking on the roads, or grabbing the trees to keep from slipping and falling.
"I also found out that the council has been offered to have the footpaths on Cashel Road gritted by a company doing so nearby, but they refused.
"This has all signs of a criminal offence by purposedly endangering pedestrians' health. Obviously, someone is getting paid but not doing their job properly.
"Let's not allow this to happen again."
