Fine Gael Senator Garret Ahearn has been elected to the position of Vice Chairperson of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party.

Senator Ahearn who was only elected to the Seanad in April 2020 now holds the second highest position with the parliamentary party.

Senator Garret Ahearn said “I’m honoured to have been elected by my colleagues to the position of Vice-Chairperson and I’m very humbled with the trust they have shown in me. I look forward to working with the Chairperson Richard Bruton, the rest of the committee and the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar while I serve in this role.”

The position was previously held by Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.

In December 2022 Deputy MacNeill was promoted by the Taoiseach to the position of Minister of State in the Department of Finance and therefore had to resign from the role of Vice-Chairperson of the Parliamentary Party.

Senator Ahearn’s family are steeped in Fine Gael history with his mother, Theresa Ahearn a TD for South Tipperary from 1989 until her untimely death in September 2020. His father, Liam Ahearn, was also a county councillor for the Cahir District.
