Popular and well-known Thurles shop to close its doors after 70 years in business

After nearly 70 years in business, Fogarty's Shop in Thurles is finally bringing its long-running relationship with the town to an end as the popular local shop closes its doors on July 31st.
The shop, which has been in the Fogarty family since the 1950s, is closing with the retirement of its owner Josie, who took over the running of the business after the passing of her father Tommy in 1996.
Located on Parnell Street, Josie has received numerous well wishes from so many locals around the town, and the family highlighted their gratitude to the people of Thurles for their support over the years.
Posted on their social media accounts, they said; "We are very grateful to all in Thurles and beyond for their kind custom over the years.
"We will especially miss serving our neighbours, the other Parnell Street and local traders, regular customers, and close friends. It was also a privilege to facilitate the work of community groups like the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
"We want to thank all of our suppliers, both local and national, who have supported us. We are also thinking of all who have worked in the shop over the last seven decades, there have been many, and they remain lifelong friends.
"We will have great memories of match days, Féile, and all of the schools. As well as selling our famous Valley Ice Cream cones, having the “coldest drinks in town” and, of course, “no-one does penny sweets like Fogartys”.
The family have put up a collection box instore until their closure on July 31st to fundraise for the great work of the Community Hospital of the Assumption or www.idonate.ie/crowdfunder/FTHOA.
