Lisa McGeeney will present a lecture this month

The December lecture from the Tipperary People and Places series ‘Public health and the Poor Law’ takes place in The Source Arts Centre, Thurles on Tuesday, December 17 at 7pm.

Lisa McGeeney will discuss what health provisions were available to the poor prior to the Poor Law Act of 1838.

She will explain the reforms brought about by the Medical Charities Act 1851 and the Public Health Act 1896, in particular the changes to requirements for midwives and nurses employed in workhouses and dispensary districts.

Lisa will then finish her talk with the changes brought about by the introduction of the county boards of health in the newly independent Ireland.
