A request for a historic building in Clonmel to be purchased by Tipperary County Council has been turned down.

Deputy Mayor Pat English made the request in relation to the Denis Lacy Hall, the landmark building near the town centre, which has recently been put up for sale.

He said that this historic building could facilitate a multitude of cultural and community groups.

However, in a written reply to his request at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District, the District Administrator Carol Creighton said that the county council is actively working on the design of a new library at Mick Delahunty Square.

“Once this is completed, this building will have a performance space, lecture room and art gallery.

“It is the view of the council to concentrate its resources on delivering this project, rather than investing in another building for cultural services,” she stated.

Suircan Environmental Forum is one of the organisations that had called on the council to buy the building in order to secure it for current and future generations.

Last year, Suircan set up a base at the Denis Lacy Hall to run their monthly repair cafe and a toy library, which has a membership of over 70 families, as well as holding swap shops and plant exchanges.

The three-storey building, which is located near The Mall on the corner of Davis Road and Anglesea Street, was constructed in the mid 1830s as a clubhouse for country gentlemen.
