€625,000 has been given to Tipperary County Council for Greenways active travel

Over €620,000 has been allocated to develop and maintain Greenways in Tipperary.

It was confirmed this week that €625,000 has been given to Tipperary County Council for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel infrastructure through Transport Infrastructure Ireland across the county during 2025.

The allocations for Tipperary include €25,000 for the Suir Blueway for the Gas House Bridge to Suir Island section, €150,000 for the Cashel to Cahir Greenway, with a further €100,000 going to the Lough Derg Greenway from Ballina to Dromineer.

The route from Marlfield Village to the Swiss Cottage has been allocated €150,000, the Waterford link on the Suir Blueway from Carrick-on-Suir to Kilmeaden has been given €100,000, and the Local Authority Greenway Support project was allocated a further €100,000.

The Tipperary funding comes as part of a national €67million funding package announced by the Government to support Greenways and active travel measures across Ireland, with approximately 24km of new Greenways expected to be delivered across the country this year.

The allocation will also be used to enable delivery of active travel infrastructure on national roads, and to progress the National Cycle Network, which identifies 3,500km of cycling corridors around the country linking cities and towns.

The Greenway allocation of €67million is in addition to approximately €293million allocated to fund the Active Travel programme, announced by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in January 2025.

The funding has been welcomed by the Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council who said that it will make Tipperary a healthier place to live.

Councillor Declan Burgess said that "this funding will be used for the development of walking and cycling facilities that offer safe, sustainable, and healthier transportation options to communities.

"This proposed Greenway will play an important role in supporting local communities to create jobs and brings visitors to our area," Cllr Burgess added.

"I believe this will open the towns of Cashel and Cahir. But also leaves an exciting role for the village of New Inn to play. My recent submission highlighted the potential this has for Tipperary Tourism in the two towns but also my preference for New Inn to play an important role," the Cashel councillor said.
