Following a well-contested 60 minutes of football played in Solohead on Sunday afternoon last, the Rockwell Rovers / Rosegreen combination emerged as the winners of this year's U17B Football West Final with a four-point margin victory over neighbours Golden Kilfeacle in Solohead.
Played in very testing conditions, full marks must go to both sides in going about the task in hand but the old adage of goals win games again shone through as the Rockwell / Rosegreen “combo” helped themselves to four over the hour that proved decisive at the final whistle.
Having made the perfect start with a Charlie Hall goal and points by James Finn and Sam Hall, Golden Kilfeacle were very much in the driving seat but that advantage was short-lived as Colin Burke burst through the Golden defence for two cracking goals and a similar finish by corner forward Ronan O’Carroll had the Rockwell / Rosegreen side three points ahead at the break, 3-0 to 1-3.
Points by James McLaughlin and Sam Hall inside the opening ten minutes of the second half saw Golden cut the deficit to a point but the Rockwell / Rosegreen boys were made of sterner stuff and replied with points by David Bergin, Colin Burke, and goal number four by Patrick Colville while a crucial penalty save by Shane Cummins late on had the finish line well in their sights.
Golden Kilfeacle who added further points through Jamie Moloney and Ning Brennan continued the search for scores but there would be no denying the Rockwell / Rosegreen side captained by Oisin Cummins on battling all the way to a well-deserved victory.
