Signage needed to stop traffic in this busy Tipperary town becoming a ‘free for all’

There have been renewed calls to install better road signage in Thurles at last week's sitting of Thurles-Templemore Municipal District Council.
Councillor Jim Ryan raised the issue, calling Liberty Square a “free for all.”
He said he has been contacted by an accident investigator following three accidents on Parnell Street.
Cllr Ryan said it isn't always clear to drivers who has right of way on Parnell and Friar streets and that road signs and markings were needed.
Cllr Seamus Hanafin supported his colleagues call and asked that signs be errected near the towns schools to indicate to drivers that school children may be nearby.
District Engineer Thomas Duffy said that the schools are a priority for road markings and signage.
On Liberty Square he said they are aware of issues for road users particularly pedestrians.
“We acknowledge the issues and that it is very confusing, but there is no easy solution,” said Mr Duffy.
Cllr Ryan suggested a yield sign might help.
Mr Duffy said he would raise the issue with Transport Infrastructure Ireland at their upcoming meeting.
However, he stressed that the meeting should not turn into a discussion on the need for a bypass or to make it about “giving out.”
But Cllr Hanafin said that one could not discuss road safety in Thurles without raising the need for a bypass
