The remains were found during excavation works on Fr. Matthews Street in Tipperary Town

At the recent Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District December meeting, Cllr Annemarie Ryan asked if remains found at a building site in Tipperary Town will delay the four units of social housing being built at the site.

A spokesperson for the housing section of the council said:

“In regards to Fr. Matthews Street in Tipperary Town, at the start of the initial site investigation we did an archaeologists investigation dig on it because of St. Breda’s Well there.

"According to prehistorical mapping, it showed there shouldn’t be anything there on the ground. We did uncover what seems to be a medieval burial site, we still have to get proper dates from bone dating. It is looking like it’s 16/17 Century. It will affect the development significantly. We need to work with National Monuments service to see what we can do at the site.”
