Ursuline Fifth Year students Gillian Aherne, Muireann Meade and Eimear McCormack were presented with a cheque and certificates for their first prize place in the 2023 Malcolm Doolin Memorial Award on Tuesday, October 24.

Gerry White of the Western Front Association congratulated the students on coming joint first along with another Irish school, Loreto in Balbriggan for their original research project into how the First World War affected the people of Tipperary.

Gerry told the assembled fifth and sixth-year students of the importance of studying the devastating effects of war so as to try and strive for peace in the present day.

He also congratulated Ms Aoife Whelan, their TY History teacher, who oversaw and guided their submission.

As part of their prize the students will be going to London in November and will lay a wreath at the cenotaph as part of a memorial ceremony for those who died in the Great War and later in the Second World War.
