Cllr Jim Ryan is asking the council to encourage tenants to apply

Councillor Jim Ryan has asked the council to do more to make people aware of the Rent a Room Relief scheme.

He said at the full sitting of Tipperary County Council that he thinks people would use the scheme but it is not well publisised.

He asked that it be included in the HAP scheme to encourage participation.

The scheme allows people to rent a room in their homes for up to €14,000 a year, tax free.

And the scheme is open to council tenants as well.

“I assume they would do so if they were encouraged to do so,” said Cllr Ryan.
