Tipperary councillors propose a novel way of naming a new estate

Local school children are to choose a name for the new housing estate in Roscrea.

That was the decision taken at last week’s sitting of the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District Council,

Councillors were asked to choose a name for the new housing development of 46 houses at Glencarrick, Roscrea.

The names put forward by the council were Monaincha Park, Dun Cré and Rosemary Gardens.

But Councillor Michael Smith took issue with the choices and who chose them.

“I’m curious where they came from. One of them sounds like something out of Eastenders,” said Cllr Smith.

Instead, Cllr Smith proposed engaging with the local school to come up with a name.

“This will be about families, and this will be their home, so we should get it right,” said Cllr Smith.

Thurles-Templemore District Administrator Sharon Scully said that as per the council guidelines, the names are put forward by the housing section.

The proposed names are then brought before the district council for councillors to vote on.

She said that naming the estate is a time-sensitive issue as the ESB need to connect the houses to the network, and a name is needed for that.

However, Cllr Noel Coonan supported Cllr Smith’s proposal saying, “local people should decide."

Cllr Shane Lee said he was ‘shocked’ by the proposed names but like the idea of "bringing the younger generation along.”

“It's a good idea to go back to the school and ask the kids to get involved.

Ms Scully also said the councillors could put forward a name if they wished.

She said they may source the name from the school children, but a councillor would need to propose it.

Cllr Smith accepted that suggestion but asked that the district send the letter requesting the schools participation.

It was agreed that the letter would be sent by the council.
